I can't believe that Luke will be two in less than a week!! Holy cow.
I love this picture of him playing in the sandbox and Mammie & Boppa's. This was from my birthday.

7 Days
There is a huge field by our house that we take the dogs to run. Sometimes there is a little creek that runs through the field and Luke LOVES to throw rocks into the water. And Daisy loves to chase the rocks that Luke tosses into the water. Lily loves to jump over and into the creek. Everyone wins.

Wait...that's not the Wii Fit?

Luke and I have spent a lot of time at my mom and dad's house lately. One fun thing for us to do is play on their new Wii. I still find it funny that my parents have a Wii considering they would not under any circumstances let us have any video games when we were growing up, but whatever. They have the Wii Fit and Luke always asks to watch me on there. His favorite game to watch is the soccer ball heading game.
Apparently he thought the tray to his booster seat looked just like the Wii Fit balance board. Haha!!

Melting My Heart
Sometimes it amazes me just how much love I have for this little boy that God gave me.
I remember when he was first born, looking at him and wondering where in the world he came from. I loved him, but really because I had to. It took me getting to know him, and him getting to know me, before our bond was truly solidified. Once that happened, my heart was overflowing with love and adoration for this life that started out inside me, and that I brought into the world.
Even now, almost two years later, I find myself in disbelief that I have a child. That I am a mom. It just doesn't seem possible. I am so thankful, though. I am so blessed to be the mommy to Luke Thomas. He continues to amaze me on a daily basis. I see so much of myself and Nate in him. He has my chubby cheeks and Nate's deep brown eyes. He has my sassiness and Nate's stubbornness. He has my shyness and Nate's sweetness. My gosh, he is just the sweetest thing ever. Even when he is being the most devious, he finds a way to be such a love that it makes me forget that I was frustrated with him in the first place.
Just today Luke did a couple things that just make my heart grow even bigger. We were driving home from my parents' house and he was drinking milk from a McDonald's milk container in his carseat. These milk jugs don't have a lid so I had told him to let me know when he was done with his drink so it wouldn't spill. We're driving along the Tollway when all of a sudden I hear, "Here go, Mama." I look at him in the rearview mirror and he's leaning forward as far as he can go, trying to hand me his milk. This may sound silly, but for some reason it just touched me.
Then tonight, we were getting him ready for bed and he was being his usual pistol self. Sitting down when I told him to stand up, fidgeting when I told him to hold still, etc. Just when my fuse was about to blow, he threw himself into my arms, gave me a big bear hug, and said "I low you Mommy". That was the first time he's said anything REMOTELY close to "I love you" AND he called me Mommy. I was a puddle.
Tomorrow may be the most trying day that he and I have had together, but Luke always seems to find a way to melt my heart. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

10 Days
Luke loves the song "So Long, Farewell" from The Sound of Music. His favorite part is when the children do "cuckoo". Even now he sometimes asks to watch "cuckoo". Back in February, he was absolutely obsessed and I would spend a good chunk of the day rewinding that scene over and over again. (He's not interested in the rest of the movie!) Every time we would go out front, he would have to stand behind the tree and pop out and yell "CUCKOO!" Silly boy.

Pack n Plays are for babies...
...according to Luke. And Luke is most definitely NOT a baby any longer.
We fought for a total of two and a half hours one day last week (combo of nap and bedtime) before I gave up, drove home, and plopped him in his crib. I was hoping it was just a fluke, so the next day I tried putting him back in the pack n play for his nap. He cried and cried for about 15 minutes before it got quiet. I went back to check on him and found this:

The picture is majorly blurry because I had to take the picture without the flash and I just don't know my camera well enough to do that without it being jacked up. Surely you can tell that he is sleeping standing up, in protest of being in that awful pack n play.
In the battle of Luke v. the pack n play, Luke won. Since then, he has taken naps and slept at night in Beth's bed. He just loves the fact that he gets to sleep in "Bee's bed".

At least he is still content in his crib...for now. I am dreading that upcoming battle, though.

11 Days!
I'm so glad Nate captured this picture when he did. I miss those snuggles before bedtime. While Luke still needs a hug before getting in his crib, he used to just melt into my arms and not want to let go.

Pool Time!
Luke played in the little pool today - for the first time this year! I set it up while he was napping so the water could get warm in the sun. He was timid at first (what else is new?) but he warmed up quickly and ended up having a BLAST. I even got in the water, too!

He loves to pour water out of his bucket.

The next Michael Phelps? :)

Splashing is so much fun!

21 Days

This picture was taken right after Nate got home from one of his hunting trips last October. He set up the video camera to show Luke some of the deer that he videotaped over the weekend. Luke didn't want to watch the deer on tv, he prefers to watch it through the tiny screen on the camera.

Crazy Sleeper
When I walked into Luke's room with my camera in hand, my initial goal was to get a picture of Luke sleeping in his underwear. I had no idea I would find this:

By the way, I did move the blanket off of his face before I left the room. :)

Adventures in Potty Training
I took the plunge.
I read the "3 Day Potty Training" e-book a few months ago (available here) and thought that it sounded like a good method to use with Luke. The book states that a child is ready to be potty trained at 22 months, which I found very interesting. When I read the book, Luke was only 20 months but I kept it in the back of my mind. When he started showing interest in the potty at 21 months, I debated back and forth with myself if I would go ahead and potty train him before he turned two (which I always said I wouldn't even THINK about it until then. Further proving that you never say never when it comes to raising your children.)
I ended up deciding that this week would be the week that I tackled the daunting task of potty training. I will admit that the only reason we didn't do it at 22 months was because I wasn't ready. The idea of taking a little boy to the potty scared the living daylights out of me. But I knew that Luke would do great with this method so I had to put all my fears aside and just go for it.
Our first day was Wednesday, May 13. I've been keeping track of every time we've gone to the potty, every accident, all of it on a notepad so I decided to type it up here so I'd always have it for my records.
* May 13, 2009 * Day 1
8:00 am - I get Luke out of bed and take his Pull Up off. We put on his big boy underwear and make a big production of throwing away his diapers. He is wearing undies with soccer balls on them so we talk about how we need to keep the soccer balls dry and he needs to tell Mommy when he needs to pee or poop.
8:20 am - first accident; took him to sit on the potty.
8:50 - accident; took him to sit on the potty.
9:25 - acted like he needed to pee by holding his crotch so we went to the potty - he did not pee
9:30 - accident; took him to sit on the potty
10:00 - said "Mama potty" so we went to sit on the potty - he did not pee
10:30 - talked about the potty again so we went again - he did not pee
11:30 - same as 10:30
12:00 pm - acted like he needed to pee by holding his crotch so we went to the potty - he did not pee. At this point, he asked to go down for a nap.
12:05 - put him in his bed for naptime. I kept him in his undies because I felt like he was waiting for me to put him in a Pull Up or diaper for naptime and he would just go to the bathroom all he wanted then. I did not want that happening.
1:00 - started crying, I took him to the potty. He did not pee and I put him back to bed.
2:30 - woke up wet and I took him to the potty. He did not pee.
3:05 - He started to pee in his undies but stopped himself before it became a full-blown accident. We went to the potty and he peed a little bit for a few times. He cried every time some came out, I think it scared him a little. It was his first time to EVER pee on the potty. I made a huge deal about it and gave him two Smarties for a treat.
3:20 - He started to dribble again so we went to the potty and he released a lot of pee. He didn't seem as freaked this time. Yay, maybe this is progress.
4:00 - more dribble in undies, peed a little in the potty
4:30 - while eating a snack, he told me that Hot Dog Dance (he was wearing MMC undies) was all wet. Sure enough, he'd dribbled again. We went to the potty and he emptied his bladder.
5:00 - acted like he needed to poop, went to the potty - no poop
5:45 - pooped a little in undies - no poop in potty
6:30 - Nate took him to the potty - he did not pee
7:00 - dribbled in undies - finished peeing in the potty
7:45 - more dribble in undies - peed just a little in potty
8:10 - put him on the potty before bed - did not pee
8:15 - put him to bed wearing undies!
10:00 - I woke him up to go potty and he emptied his bladder. His undies were dry and I asked him if he wanted to wear a Pull Up. He said no, he wanted his "fishies" - he was wearing Nemo undies. I told him if he needed to pee or poop in the night to yell for Mommy and I would take him to the potty.
End of Day 1 and I had some major mixed emotions. I felt like he was starting to "get it" in the fact that he didn't want to have full-blown accidents in his undies. But I also wondered what in the heck I had gotten myself into. At this point though, I wanted to finish the three days before giving up. I didn't count the total of soiled underwear this day, but based on my notes there were at LEAST 11 pair.
May 14, 2009 * Day 2 *
3:00 am - I woke up from a dead sleep to check on him - undies were dry! I woke him up to potty but he lasted about 5 seconds before he asked to have "fishies back on" and "go to Uke bed". Poor thing.
6:00 - Nate checked on him before he left for work and his undies were still dry!
7:30 - I heard him rolling around in his bed so I went to check on him. His undies were a little damp, but nothing was on the sheet. We went to the potty and he finished emptying his bladder!
8:15 - tried to poop - no poop, just a little gas. He was excited about that, though. :)
10:15 - he ate some cereal and when he was done, he acted like he needed to pee. We went to the potty and he emptied his bladder!
11:15 - had a huge accident while playing; it totally came out of nowhere and really surprised him. He was pretty upset about getting Hot Dog Dance all wet.
12:20 - he ate lunch and I took him to the potty afterwards. He peed.
12:45 - was playing and squatted down and grunted so I grabbed him and RAN to the potty. Luckily nothing had come out so he sat and pooped on the potty!!!!!!
1:15 - went down for a nap in undies
4:15 - woke up DRY!
5:00 - He told me that his undies were wet, but they were actually dry. So we ran to the potty and he emptied his bladder!! This was his first time to use real verbal communication that he needed to go potty.
6:30ish - He and Nate were eating dinner and Nate noticed him making a funny face and grunting. Nate rushed him to the potty and he had pooped a tiny bit in his undies, but he finished on the potty!!
8:45 - Went pee on the potty before bed.
9:00 - in bed for the night
11:00 - check on him, he was dry. Took him to potty but he didn't need to go. All he wanted to do was go back to sleep!
End of Day 2 - feeling SO MUCH BETTER about things. He only had one major accident and one minor accident today which is a HUGE improvement from yesterday. Total soiled undies was only 3, and that includes the ones he wore to bed Wednesday night. YAY for LUKE!!
* May 15, 2009 * Day 3 *
6:00 am - Nate checked on him before work and he was dry!
7:00 - I heard him rolling around in bed so I went to check on him. He was awake, DRY, and so I took him to the potty. He emptied his bladder!
8:45 - He looked at me with a funny look on his face and grabbed his crotch so we ran to the potty. He peed a lot again.
9:00 - We left the house to brave our first errand run without the comfort of diapers. We went to Target to return a box of diapers I bought on Tuesday (haha) and then to Walmart to return a package of Pull Ups I bought on Monday. THAT was a great feeling!! I took Luke's "potty bag" (because it's no longer a diaper bag!) equipped with a fold up seat for public toilets, wipes, hand sanitizer, and two changes of undies and clothes. When we got to both places, I showed him where the restrooms were and we talked about how if he needed to pee or poop, to tell me and that we would go there and he could pee or poop in the potty. I reminded him that he didn't want to get his undies wet and yucky so to tell Mommy when he needed to go potty. Halfway through our Target run, he said "Mama! Potty!" My heart fell to my chest, especially since we were in the very back of the store! I practically ran to the front, grabbed him and the back from the cart, and we went in the bathroom. I sat him on the toilet and all he did was just play around. No pee at all; in hindsight, I think he just wanted to see the bathroom and see what I would do!
10:30 - We were almost home from the store and he says "Mama yucky." I stepped on the gas and told him we were almost home so try to wait to go potty. We ran to the bathroom when we got here and he emptied his bladder in the potty. He had a LOT of pee so I know he'd been holding it for awhile!!
12:15 - We went potty before naptime and he peed, then said he needed to poop and a tiny little bit came out. (Sorry if TMI.) He said he was all done, so I put him in bed. Things could get pretty interesting durning naptime.
2:00 - I'm typing this up and Luke is still napping. I've checked on him twice and he is clean and dry. I hope to catch him as soon as he wakes up so he doesn't poop in his bed. I will finish the update for the rest of today later on. But just to note - he is in the same undies that he wore to bed last night!!
3:00 - woke up from his nap and went pee on the potty!
4:50 - told me he needed to poop so we RAN to the potty. He only peed, but I was so proud of him for telling me he needed to go potty.
5:30 - We left for Luke's cousin Hayden's 6th birthday party in Burleson. I knew this was going to be a huge test for Luke. I put him on the potty before we left (to be on the safe side) but he didn't need to go. The ride over was 45 minutes and we went to the restroom as soon as we got there. He did not go. We were there for 2.5 hours and I took him to the potty three times and he didn't go once. I'm getting a little nervous about him being too scared to go in public!
8:45 - We leave to head home. He hasn't peed in four hours so I'm not looking forward to the drive home.
9:30 - We're outside of Venus and he tells me "Mama yucky." I asked if he needed to potty and he said "Uke potty". I step on the gas and get to a gas station in Venus, expecting his carseat to be FLOODED with pee. Surprisingly, it's totally dry. I had his frog potty in the car, but didn't really want to be sitting out there in the dark so we went inside the gas station. It was an Exxon so it was on the decent side. I sat him on the potty and he immediately says "All done." I told him that he better go pee since he made me stop at a gas station. He ended up peeing a river. Yay for going in public - at a gas station no less. It's a good thing I ended up going out of my way to stay on the highways rather than going the FM roads...he would have had to just pee in his pants because I don't think pulling over on a two-lane road would have been the safest thing ever.
9:50 - He's finally in bed.
So we have SUCCESSFULLY completed the 3 Day Potty Training. I am so glad that we did this, it really was the best method for Luke. I am just SO PROUD of him. He did not have ANY accidents today, which is a HUGE improvement from just two days ago! This doesn't mean I don't expect him to have accidents here and there, but I definitely think he "gets" the whole going on the potty thing. And I must say that I am so, so, so excited that we do NOT have to buy diapers again until there is another little baby in our family. :)
I read the "3 Day Potty Training" e-book a few months ago (available here) and thought that it sounded like a good method to use with Luke.
22 Days

Luke cannot contain his excitement when Daddy gets home from work. He saw Nate's truck pull up through the windows by the front door and he just HAD to run out to find his Daddy.

Luke loves to "help" around the house. Using the Swiffer Vac to clean up after himself is something he loves to do!

24 Days

This picture was taken at the beginning of September. Luke was 15 months old and had decided that he did not want to sit in the high chair anymore. He refused to eat and would throw a big fat fit during dinner time. So we just put him in a chair (on a phonebook) and he decided he would eat off Daddy's plate. Within a few days I got a booster seat and he's been eating at the table ever since.
