I'll be the first to admit that I still have a lot of growing up to do.
I thought that when I became a wife at the young age of 21, I'd officially grow up then.
Didn't happen.
I remember thinking when I graduated college and got my first full-time job at 23 that I'd officially behave like an adult.
Nope.
I knew for sure when I became a mother at 24 that I had no choice but to grow up.
Apparently that wasn't exactly the case.
That's not to say I haven't grown up
a little. I'm definitely not the same twenty year old sorority girl, living up the college life at Texas A&M. Sometimes I don't even remember what it was like to be that girl. Getting married, owning a home, graduating college, getting a job, and having a child will mature you in some ways. It just has to. But there are other ways where I still behave like a child. An irresponsible child who doesn't take care of her belongings.
This past Tuesday I realized that I had lost the diamond necklace Nate gave me after Luke was born. What kind of a person does that? Certainly not a mature, responsible wife and mother. I turned our house upside down looking for this necklace, the entire time hating myself for losing this irreplaceable piece of jewelry. It's not that I lost a diamond necklace -
I lost the necklace I received when I gave birth to my first-born son. I'm getting nauseous just thinking about it. I had Nate's family tearing their house apart because I thought I might have left it down there. I was starting to grow weary today, the third day that I have looked over and over for it. I told Nate before he left for softball that I had just about given up because I didn't know how it was going to turn up because I had looked everywhere. But at the same time, I kept imagining myself finding it. He said to have faith that it would turn up.
I wanted to believe him, but it was hard at the moment. Nevertheless, I came inside and looked again. The kitchen drawers, the cabinet in the laundry room, my bedside table, the shelves in the bedroom, my desk. Now there is always clutter on my desk no matter how hard I try to keep it clutter-free. I moved it all around, put away what I could, and I happened to bump a pile of rolled pennies sitting in the corner. (I have a big bowl of pennies and nickels that I try to make into coin rolls whenever I have a free second.) I'm certain I had moved them on Tuesday, but obviously not because my necklace was UNDERNEATH the rolls of pennies!!!!
I'm in disbelief that I found it, but at the same time I am so incredibly relieved and excited. I immediately put it on (as I was calling Nate to let him know). I told him that I was never taking it off again. His response was, "I don't think that's the lesson here. Next time, put it in a safe place."
So here's my lesson in responsibility. Being a responsible adult means taking the time to put prized possessions (or anything for that matter) in it's proper place. Don't just leave stuff around on the counters - or on the desk! Put things where they belong and you won't lose them. From now on, whenever my necklace is not clasped around my neck, it will be kept safe in the jewelry box that it came in.
Maybe I'm on the road to being a responsible grown up. Only time will tell, but I certainly hope so.
